Taekwondo vs. Karate vs. Kickboxing: What's the Difference?
May 26, 2026 · 6 min read
If you're new to martial arts, all the different names can be confusing. Here's a simple breakdown.
Taekwondo
A Korean martial art known for dynamic kicks, forms and a strong focus on discipline and respect. Training takes place in a dojang.
Karate
A Japanese martial art with a strong emphasis on hand strikes, stances and kata (forms). Training takes place in a dojo.
Kickboxing
A striking style combining punches and kicks. Fitness kickboxing uses those techniques for a high-energy cardio workout, without contact.
Which is best?
The best style is the one you'll stick with, taught by instructors you trust. School culture matters more than the name on the door.
